Seminars
All officials must register with USA Hockey and [re]certify each season. Certifications from the prior season expire on Dec 1 of the current season. For example, if you were fully certified for the 2022-2023 season, you make work games through November 30, 2023. After November 30, you may not officiate any USA Hockey games until you are completely certified for the 2023-2024 season and have received your crest.
Registration with USA Hockey as an official for the 2023-2024 season will not be accepted after December 31, 2023. Certification requirements must be completed by February 28, 2024.
Register and certify before November 30 because after that, in-person seminars will be hard to find.
Level 1
Sept 7
Level 1 certification requirements changed significantly for the 2023-2024 season. The original plan was that Level 1 officials would attend two seminars. The first would be a three hour Zoom seminar hosted by the USA Hockey national office. The second would be a three hour, in-person session that would include 90 minutes of additional classroom instruction and approximately 60 minutes of ice drills. A Level 1 official who attended both the Zoom seminar and the in-person session would get full seminar credit and credit for completing their online modules.
That plan has changed. The in-person session will still be required. There will be a classroom portion to that session. There will be no online Zoom seminar requirement and no module requirement. However, you are highly encouraged to view the online modules before you attend the in-person seminar. There will be concepts discussed at the in-person seminar that are covered in the online modules. Barry Zalcman, the New England District Referee-in-Chief, will be hosting bi-weekly Zoom calls for new officials to cover specific topics. Expect to hear more about this directly from Barry. When I know more I will post it here. With this new direction, we will start scheduling more in-person, on-ice sessions in CT. There will be plenty of Level 1 in-person seminars scheduled once we ramp up. We will be targeting the following locations for additional Level 1 in-person sessions: the Hartford area, Northford, Shelton, and Darien/Stamford.
- The Level 1 seminar in Shelton on Sept 10 is full.
- A new Level 1 seminar in Simsbury on Oct 7 has been added. Start time is 10:00am and we will be off the ice at 2:30pm. Sign up on courses.usahockey.com/public
- A new Level 1 seminar in Darien on Oct 28 has been added. Start time is 9:30am and we will be off the ice at 2:10pm. Sign up on courses.usahockey.com/public
